Pedigree Report by Karin "Kat" Webster

You know what a Dr Johnson fan I am and I would personally love to own a filly by him. Since he is deceased the chances to get a hold of one are limited, so any filly by him going to auction now must be considered if wanting to obtain the blood. I think in years to come we will see Dr Johnson as broodmare sire of some extremely good gallopers and probably a couple of outright champions. His two lines to one of the greatest distaff influences of all in Buckpasser, his Mr Prospector blood and his wonderful damline will make him a formidable genetic force through his daughters and grand daughters.

It is also most appealing to see that this filly is sex balanced to Nijinsky 3f x 4m, always a promising line breeding subject, and she has a third line to Northern Dancer through Palace Music who is an extremely close genetic relation to Nijinsky and like him a superior distaff influence. This is no doubt due largely to the superb mare Flaming Page to whom the dam of Lot 91 has a valuable sex balance 4mx4f. A very big tick in her favor in my opinion believing as I do in the necessity of line breeding to great mares, not just great stallions. (We only have to look as far as Northerly to see what inbreeding to Flaming Page can bring about)

The dam of lot 91 Broglio also carries two lines to Princequillo and her third dam Century Miss (Golden Slipper winner) is by yet another hugely influential broodmare sire in Century.
If you wanted a filly carrying a well rounded and cleverly “energized” selection of the very best distaff genetics available to the modern breeder in WA, on paper Lot 91 is a lovely choice. And she has something a little bit extra working in her favor that could definitely enhance her already very good prospects both a racemare and a broodmare.
Lot 91’s seventh dam carries a sex balanced line breeding to the breed shaping sire West Australian through her sire Linacre (the West Australian male line) and her third dam La Naine, a daughter of West Australian.
The West Australian male line is more famously the male line of Man O War and his sone War Admiral who is so prominent in Buckpasser. This is also the male line of Display who appears for example in Mr Prospector through Native Dancer, who was out of the Display mare Geisha. West Australian is also a vital factor in the sire Ben Brush, and his sons Broomstick and Sweep – Ben Brush’s sire Bramble was out of a mare by a son of West Australian. West Australian is also the damsire of Musket, sire of Spearmint and Nearco’s third dam was by Spearmint etc.etc. Thus we see the Northern Dancer / Nasrullah link to this mighty sire.

What makes this filly a very attractive prospect is the way the lower quarter of her dam Broglio’s pedigree lends itself so beautifully to a sire like Dr Johnson, who carries many high quality lines to the American West Australian male line stallions and also to their influential daughters. Broglio really is genetically structured in such a way as to respond powerfully to this mating and produce something very good – hopefully that is exactly what she has done in the shape of Lot 91.
There are also nice balancing influences throughout the filly’s pedigree in terms of the always invaluable French influence Djebel blending with other French bred horses in the pedigree (eg: the dam of Nasrullah’s superb son Nashua) and the sire Roi Herode, who is another powerful influence on the tail female line of Lot 91 through inbreeding to the grand sire Blue Peter (out of a mare by The Tetrarch, son of Roi Herode) The obvious link is with Nasrullah, out of a Tetrarch granddaughter, but this great sire also appears in Native Dancer and thus Northern Dancer, as well as through a number of other individuals.

This filly hails from a nice family. I note that Natural Blitz (the champion HK sprinter) is a relative – he is by a Northern Dancer line sire and inbred to the War Admiral horse Relic – the West Australian male line. Another member of the immediate family is Crozier, winner of WATC Champagne Stakes – by Godswalk, a sire who is inbred to the West Australian male line stallion Display. We can see how the pattern for likely success with this family emerges.
Even though the dam of Lot 91, Broglio, only won over 1250m and her dam only over a 1100m – and third dam won a Slipper – and there is clearly high class speed in the family – I suspect this filly will throw more to the stamina influences in her pedigree – at her best over a mile and further. However she should hopefully have inherited some of that good speed and the sex balances to both Nijinsky and the mare Flaming Page should assist that cause.

If I was going to this sale as a buyer this filly would be right up in the top echelon of my “must inspect” list. If she was a decent type and sound I personally would buy her as a breeding prospect alone. But there is plenty in her pedigree to say that she is also a promising racing prospect. Be sure to check her out.
