Photos of the filly....

Good friend and fellow Perth Turf Talk partner Geoff Whittle with Bunbury trainer Tim Crosby where kind enough to venture over to our filly's agistment paddock in Dardanup and take some happy snaps.

As you can see she has some growing still to do but is a nice type.

Thanks Geoff!!!

Whats in a name???

As of this moment in time the heading of this blog contains the name "Pulse of Perth".

This is there for no other reason for this except I wanted a heading with the name of the filly and as we are naming her as a partner group I choose my current preferred name to fill the temporary gap.

The majority of race horses running around are named after the sire or dam - this horse's dam by Bletchley Park was named Broglio - which is the name of a famous baseballer in Usa. Bletchley Park from the dam Enigma was named due it being the country estate in the UK that was the centre of codebreaking activity in WW2 - the famous enigma code.

I will be asking all partners to submit two names each after which time we will be voting to decide the preference in which they are submitted to the registrar.

Once we have named the filly its there for good - so think smartly about the names and vote wisely.

Here are some other names that I have thought of or have been suggested to me that I don't mind (a lot of them have the Doctor connection) -

Stephi Scope, Hearts A Mess, Scrubs, Temperature Rising, Stemcell, Saline Solution, Ecee Gee Gee, Unlock the Doc, and Cure All.

Pedigree Report by Karin "Kat" Webster

You know what a Dr Johnson fan I am and I would personally love to own a filly by him. Since he is deceased the chances to get a hold of one are limited, so any filly by him going to auction now must be considered if wanting to obtain the blood. I think in years to come we will see Dr Johnson as broodmare sire of some extremely good gallopers and probably a couple of outright champions. His two lines to one of the greatest distaff influences of all in Buckpasser, his Mr Prospector blood and his wonderful damline will make him a formidable genetic force through his daughters and grand daughters.

It is also most appealing to see that this filly is sex balanced to Nijinsky 3f x 4m, always a promising line breeding subject, and she has a third line to Northern Dancer through Palace Music who is an extremely close genetic relation to Nijinsky and like him a superior distaff influence. This is no doubt due largely to the superb mare Flaming Page to whom the dam of Lot 91 has a valuable sex balance 4mx4f. A very big tick in her favor in my opinion believing as I do in the necessity of line breeding to great mares, not just great stallions. (We only have to look as far as Northerly to see what inbreeding to Flaming Page can bring about)

The dam of lot 91 Broglio also carries two lines to Princequillo and her third dam Century Miss (Golden Slipper winner) is by yet another hugely influential broodmare sire in Century.
If you wanted a filly carrying a well rounded and cleverly “energized” selection of the very best distaff genetics available to the modern breeder in WA, on paper Lot 91 is a lovely choice. And she has something a little bit extra working in her favor that could definitely enhance her already very good prospects both a racemare and a broodmare.
Lot 91’s seventh dam carries a sex balanced line breeding to the breed shaping sire West Australian through her sire Linacre (the West Australian male line) and her third dam La Naine, a daughter of West Australian.
The West Australian male line is more famously the male line of Man O War and his sone War Admiral who is so prominent in Buckpasser. This is also the male line of Display who appears for example in Mr Prospector through Native Dancer, who was out of the Display mare Geisha. West Australian is also a vital factor in the sire Ben Brush, and his sons Broomstick and Sweep – Ben Brush’s sire Bramble was out of a mare by a son of West Australian. West Australian is also the damsire of Musket, sire of Spearmint and Nearco’s third dam was by Spearmint etc.etc. Thus we see the Northern Dancer / Nasrullah link to this mighty sire.

What makes this filly a very attractive prospect is the way the lower quarter of her dam Broglio’s pedigree lends itself so beautifully to a sire like Dr Johnson, who carries many high quality lines to the American West Australian male line stallions and also to their influential daughters. Broglio really is genetically structured in such a way as to respond powerfully to this mating and produce something very good – hopefully that is exactly what she has done in the shape of Lot 91.
There are also nice balancing influences throughout the filly’s pedigree in terms of the always invaluable French influence Djebel blending with other French bred horses in the pedigree (eg: the dam of Nasrullah’s superb son Nashua) and the sire Roi Herode, who is another powerful influence on the tail female line of Lot 91 through inbreeding to the grand sire Blue Peter (out of a mare by The Tetrarch, son of Roi Herode) The obvious link is with Nasrullah, out of a Tetrarch granddaughter, but this great sire also appears in Native Dancer and thus Northern Dancer, as well as through a number of other individuals.

This filly hails from a nice family. I note that Natural Blitz (the champion HK sprinter) is a relative – he is by a Northern Dancer line sire and inbred to the War Admiral horse Relic – the West Australian male line. Another member of the immediate family is Crozier, winner of WATC Champagne Stakes – by Godswalk, a sire who is inbred to the West Australian male line stallion Display. We can see how the pattern for likely success with this family emerges.
Even though the dam of Lot 91, Broglio, only won over 1250m and her dam only over a 1100m – and third dam won a Slipper – and there is clearly high class speed in the family – I suspect this filly will throw more to the stamina influences in her pedigree – at her best over a mile and further. However she should hopefully have inherited some of that good speed and the sex balances to both Nijinsky and the mare Flaming Page should assist that cause.

If I was going to this sale as a buyer this filly would be right up in the top echelon of my “must inspect” list. If she was a decent type and sound I personally would buy her as a breeding prospect alone. But there is plenty in her pedigree to say that she is also a promising racing prospect. Be sure to check her out.

A potential staying filly...

Heading into the sale I was determined to find a potential staying filly capable of winning an Oaks or Derby and am pleased to say I was able to buy the horse I wanted. This filly is from the last crop of local sire Dr Johnson who from 5 crops of raced horses has thrown 10 stakeswinners including Dr John, Westerly Breeze, Mafeking and Loml. His stake winners to runners ratio of over 5% is very good.

She is, like a lot of Dr Johnson’s, on the small side but is well built, proportional and should mature into a nice racehorse. I used the services of Ascot Bloodstock and trainer Brett Pope in selecting this horse. There comments were as follows –

“She is a nice filly with no obvious faults. She was the best yearling that we inspected at Namerik thoroughbreds.

Dr Johnson didn’t have the best selection of broodmares to service in his career and as such a lot of the produce are ordinary however this filly looks amongst the best. She is a nice type who would make an excellent racing prospect with residual value as a broodmare later.”Dr Johnson won 4 races in just a short 9 race career in Ireland all of them over 2000m or more and a 2nd place in the Group 1 Irish Derby 2400m. His bloodlines carry a strong stamina influence which was extremely evident with Westerly Breeze and Dr Bella filling minor positions in the 2008 Perth Cup. Dr Johnson does not throw many 2yo runners and looking at this filly it is not expected she will race as a 2yo, we are hoping however she will develop strongly later in her career especially when getting out to a middle distance or further.

Her dam line compliments this stamina influence with a nice injection of speed which can be seen in the detailed pedigree report compiled by Pedigree analyst Kat Webster who works for Ascot Bloodstock at the end of this document.

I have had her X-ray checked and also scoped to ensure we are buying a sound horse.

I have selected Brett Pope to train her. Brett is based at Pinjarra with a small team of around 20 horses which is rapidly expanding. Recent city winner Solidwickedcruel is his best horse. Brett is a young guy with plenty of ambition who has been involved with horses all his life despite having only had a trainer’s license since 2007. Brett helped pick out this filly and has shown a commitment to this horse in taking a 10% share for himself. He does all his own breaking in and track work and gives each horse personlised care which is one of the main reasons I picked him as the trainer. He is also very straight forward with his owners and a good communicator.

This filly is also Westspeed eligible and will be paid up for meaning she will race for bonuses from $1,500 up to $15,000 per win. This bonus prize money applies to the winner of any 2yo and 3yo races over $6,000 stake money (excluding group and listed) plus 3yo’s in All Aged Maiden events. The Westspeed Stayer’s Incentive also applies to any 3yo and 4yo winners of any TAB covered event over 1800m or more. Basically this scheme means that should she win a Saturday class race under any of the above conditions it will be worth $47,500 in prize money, ($32,500 + $15,000 bonus).

The filly will racing in the Perth Turf Talk racing colors of predominately orange and black (see photo). Once I have sold all the shares I will get everyone to submit two names each and we can have a vote to name her. She has already been floated down to her agistment paddock in Dardanup.
